This article regards the concept of workers involvement within management processes.  It also hope to increase scope to information and consultation, mainly with respect to Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) related matters. Concerning Portugal, this scope is addressed within three levels: cross-industry, sectoral and company. Portugal has a system of social dialogue with a high incidence of workplace-based employee representation through worker councils (comissões de trabalhadores) and trade union delegates (representantes/delegados sindicais). There are comitties or councils alternative bodies for safety and health elected by the workforce. The article describes both direct and indirect participation forms with a focus on formal participation structures (legal instruments).
