Abstract

Since the nineteenth century new genera (2), species (14) and varieties (2) of invertebrates and plants were defined using names from places North of the River Douro. The most used specific names were the toponyms of Porto, Douro and Valongo. A list of taxa (2 genera and 28 species) dedicated to former professors at the universities of Porto, Minho and Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro is also presented. Although widely cited in the geological literature, some of the names of these taxa do not comply with the rules of the ICZN and the ICBN; they are synonyms of older designations or must be formally considered as invalid names.
