Os Monárquicos e as Eleições de 1969

Most of the Portuguese monarchists supported the Estado Novo, not only in recognition for the overthrow of the First Republic, but also, and most of all, because of their convergence with the authoritarian and conservative values of Salazar’s government.However, in the 1950’s, following the end of the II World War and the triumph of democracies in Western Europe, some opposition monarchist groups emerged – the so called independent monarchists – claiming for political reforms and the restoration of public liberties. During Marcello Caetano’s government, which promoted some political decompression,the independent monarchists organized an Electoral Commission - the Monarchist Electoral Commission (CEM) – and submitted to the polls in the 1969 election forAssembleia Nacional, the Estado Novo parliament. Although CEM members didn’tachieve the goal of electing a candidate, they took the opportunity to promote, duringthe election campaign, their reformist agenda and to protest against the suppression ofthe rights of citizenship by the Estado Novo.

A maioria dos monárquicos portugueses apoiaram o Estado Novo, não apenas reconhecidos pelo derrube da I República, mas também, e sobretudo, pela convergência com os valores com o governo autoritário e conservador de Salazar. Todavia, a partir dadécada de 50, após o fim da II Guerra Mundial e o triunfo das democracias na EuropaOcidental, emergiram diversos grupos monárquicos não alinhados com o regime – autoproclamados monárquicos independentes – que reivindicavam uma abertura política e a restauração das liberdades públicas.Em face da abertura política promovida por Marcello Caetano, constituem uma Comissão Eleitoral - a Comissão Eleitoral Monárquica - que se apresenta a sufrágio naseleições para a Assembleia Nacional em 1969. Embora não tenham eleito deputados,afirmaram no decurso da campanha eleitoral um programa político reformista edefenderam a restituição dos direitos de cidadania que o Estado Novo havia suprimido.
