Abstract
The first centenary of the death of the marquis of Pombal, celebrated in 1882, updated controversies surrounding his past in Portugal and Brazil. In this thesis, the author takes the records of that event as both an incentive and a starting point to reflect on different narratives about the marquis. This is not a work about the reign of King José I and the government of his minister. It is the result of an investigation on representations of Pombal in different moments of his posterity. It presents a double effort. On the one hand, commemorations and temporality intertwine, in the search for connections and recurrences in an expanded chronological scope. On the other, the aim is to understand how some of the debates raised by the 1882 celebrations in the cities of Lisbon, Oporto, and Rio de Janeiro mobilized memory and historic discourses – articulating different voices from the selected past, current present, and an idealized future.
