Abstract
Religious spaces and experiences, specially convents, marked the physical and social landscapes of Portuguese modern villages and cities. Observing the descriptions from Horta, in Faial Island (Azores), most of them made by visitors, we can easily find that reality, with many references to conventual buildings, some of which defined (and still define today) the urban landscape. This text intends to analyze the main sources, written and iconographic, depicting Horta and produced between the 16th Century and the early 19th Century, searching for common traces as how this space was represented and if religious spaces, particularly convents, had a special presence among the factors described.
