Os caldeireiros de Lisboa: problemáticas de um inventário

A produção de caldeiraria e maquinaria a vapor teve uma representação efectiva na cidade de Lisboa através da existência de oficinas de serralharia, durante os finais do século XIX e os inícios do século XX, das quais destacamos João Perez, família Collares ou Pierre Dumorá entre outras. A maior parte destas empresas não atingiam as dimensões em área, recursos humanos, ou mesmo em produção que as grandes marcas inglesas ou alemãs responsáveis por um abastecimento a nível global. Nesto sentido é fundamental debater se estas oficinas ou espaços fabris seriam indiscutivelmente espaços industriais ainda que tendo contribuído abundantemente para um processo de industrialização, independentemente do sucesso do mesmo. Os registos oficiais das entidades reguladoras e dos inquéritos industriais nacionais apontam para uma actividade que terá deixado exemplares das suas criações únicas no território português. Alguns destes exemplares ainda se encontram no terreno com maior ou menor possibilidade de interpretação arqueológica. Como tantas outras materialidades destas épocas do passado recente, correm um sério risco de desaparecer. O objectivo deste trabalho é dar a conhecer as produções destas oficinas, com exemplos de equipamentos que ainda podem ser encontrados no território português, relacionando-os com aquilo que são os registos oficiais, com todas as limitações e problemas que os mesmos encerram.

The production of boilers and steam engines had an effective representation in the city of Lisbon through the existence of locksmith shops during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Although most of them did not reach the size in area, human resources, or even production as the great English or German brands, these workshops or manufacturing spaces may not even be considered industrial spaces, in spite of their contribution an industrialization,
regardless of the success of such industrial development. The official records of national regulatory authorities and industrial surveys points out to an activity which left evidence of its unique creations on Portuguese territory. Some of these specimens are still out there. Like so many other materialities of the recent past, they run a serious risk of disappearing. The purpose of this paper is to talk about the productions of these spaces, with examples of equipment that could exist in the Portuguese territory, relating them with the official records, with all the limitations and problems that such study engage on.
