Abstract
The sociological analysis of art and artists presents the work of art as the product of artists ‘action, thus connecting and defining artists through arts works and in relation to arts worlds. The construction of an artist paradigm, the social production of art, art dependency of market dynamics or the independency of art creation, calls artists for a central role in the whole process and thereby establishes them as key agents in sociological discussion.
In this work we analyzed the evolution of artists ' dynamics across times and society, as to understand what is implied in a 21st century definition of artist, or professional artist. Performing artists play a necessary role of intermediation between the creative work and its final form as presentation on stage, thus a key element on the possibility of art; their process of education and career built as artists, inner organization and relation to the arts are here presented as an essential path to their definition as artists, and acceptance in a restricted professional art world. We also analyze the role of professional artist’s organizations as mediators of artists and policy makers, the economy of professions and globalization. Finally, we present a stable disposition of artists, the one that may explain their preference for a difficult and somewhat illogical profession and way of life.
