Abstract

The port city of Ormuz/Hormuz, controlled by the Portuguese since the early years of the sixteenth century, was an international centre for the trade of Arabian and Persian horses. Surprisingly, the taxing of this important trade was the second source of financing of the Portuguese Estado da Índia.
