Abstract
This paper will present a new rock art site whose iconography is formed mainly by cup marks. It covers a large surface polished by the waters of the stream of “Barranco do Sambro”, belonging to the Mira’s hydrographic network. The decorated stone is periodically submerged, causing the engravings to show a high degree of erosion. In front of the decorated rock, one can find vertical bluffs, a scenography, that almost certainly contributed to the ritualized behaviour which was conduciveto the production of the engravings. In addition to the subcircular images which were produced by pecking, 195 cup marks were identified with subcircular or oval outlines and different depths. Cup marks organized in lines such as in parallel lines can be distinguished. Two of which, contain greater dimensionsand could have been gameboards, whose use during Pre‑historic times would have reached beyond a playful function to a social religious context. Some parallels allow us to attribute the engravings,of the Várzea Grande,to the Late Neolithic period.
