Abstract
Within the inventory of urban settings of the Architectural Heritage Information System, an inventory method was developed specifically for urban settlements. It was based on data gathered in the city of Lisbon. This approach encompassed the whole of Lisbon, including its old nucleus and historic areas based on georeferenced data. It addressed two main issues: the problem of the effective extension of the city defined by its legal perimeter, which involved a coherent yet flexible process of dividing and rating urban areas; and the complexity and density of urban fabrics which led to the systematization of essential traces
that different areas have in common and therefore to the acknowledgement of the aggregating elements of an urban structure. Having been based on a minimally standardized morphological analysis, the result can be adapted to the inventory of other urban settlements.
