Abstract
This article compares the perspectives of Axel Honneth and Laurent Thévenot about what we can call different regimes of recognition(s) of the person(s) and their capacities, in order to build ananalytical framework which allows us to clarify the processes of construction, by health professionals,of the recognition of palliative care’s patients in their uniqueness as subjects, through a regime offamiliarization between healthcare team, patients and their families. We do this through the analysisof empirical data (in particular obtained by a PhD research and also the project Building paths to death— an analysis of everyday work in palliative care), funded by the Portuguese Foundation for Science andTechnology (PTDC/CS-SOC/119621/2010). The data here presented were collected, within theprojects mentioned above, through 12 months of direct observation in two hospitals with palliativecare units and through 55 in-depth interviews with physicians, nurses and social workers in sixhospitals with palliative care services in mainland Portugal.
