Abstract
The study of the Roman mosaic in a certain area of the Roman Empire must take into account the fact that, at the turn of the 1st century BC to the 1st century AD, this form of decoration became widespread in Italy and gradually spread to all parts of the Empire.
The Roman mosaics found until today in Portugal mirror not only this evolution in the art of decorating floors or walls with mosaic but also the artistic influences coming from other regions and their regionalisation.
