Abstract

The constant survey of documentary sources and the remarkable production of studies on Italian merchants in Lisbon in the 15th and 16th centuries facilitated a broader reflection that allows us to highlight some common traits in the Portuguese path of these foreigners in relation to their interaction with the court and society of the host country. Through the journey of renowned «Italian» merchants in the Portuguese capital, namely the commercial networks they interacted with, the benefits received by the Portuguese court and their relations with Portuguese
society, a figure will be defined, that of the Italian Merchant active in Lisbon at the end of the 15th century until the middle of the 16th century.
