Abstract
This text resulted from the communication presented at the seminar A Medieval Portuguese Illumination. The medieval book: from the codex to the digital age, which took place at the National Library of Portugal, on the 27th and 28th of September 2012. Our participation included a summary approach to an Alcobanese manuscript, as announced in the title, a small century Bible XIII, richly lit. However, before focusing on the aforementioned codex, we will present brief notes on this typology of book, which registers a remarkable increase in production from, essentially, the second quarter of 1200, underlining its relevance to the history of high culture.
