Abstract
This text discusses how the female characters in Nuno Bragança's novels deal with the pressure that society exerts on them, because they behave as emancipated and independent women in a conservative and macho context of the fifties and sixties in Portugal. This situation causes excruciating suffering that can lead to depression, alcohol and drug use and, ultimately, suicide.
