Abstract

After the celebrations of the International Year of Planet Earth-IYPE (2007-2009), the Portuguese National Committee for the International Geosciences Programme (IGCP) of UNESCO was formally established in Portugal, for the first time, under the aegis of the Portuguese National Commission for UNESCO. This Programme is based in a partnership between the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS). The activities of the National Committees for IGCP have as guidelines the motto Geosciences in the service of Society. In this sense, several activities have been already developed by the Portuguese National Committee with a strong focus on the dissemination and promotion of Geosciences in Portugal and with the involvement of geoscientists and educators and in straight cooperation with the Portuguese Speaking Countries Community.
