Abstract
This paper explores the international currency of various issues debated within Noucentisme with regard to mural painting. Based on the work of some of this movement's practitioners and theorists (Joaquín Torres-García, Xavier Nogués, Joaquim Folch i Torres), the paper focuses on three key aspects of artistic modernity at the time in Europe: the integration of the visual arts and architecture, the social role of art, and the research on bidimensionality in painting. The paper identifies parallelisms and affinities between noucentista mural painting – in both its theoretical and practical dimensions – and the constructivist current of the European avant-gardes, with a particular focus on mural art theorisation at the Bauhaus. The purpose is not to establish relations of 'influence' between these movements and Noucentisme, but rather to show the extent to which the noucentista discussion on mural painting was in sync with contemporary artistic debates happening beyond Catalonia.
