Abstract
The occurrence of accidents has always coexisted with mining practices. Thus, despite the bad memories associated with them, they are a pertinent theme for the history of mining. In this context, the Cabo Mondego coal mine, the oldest to work in Portugal, was not an exception. Its time span of more than 200 years of mining was marked by several incidents of greater or lesser seriousness, with emphasis on the large landslide of 1941 that interrupted its activity in a very sensitive period of fuel shortage. Considering his contribution to preview and mitigate the consequences of the accident, stands out the involvement of Ernest Fleury (18781958), a geologist, professor at the Instituto Superior Técnico and for a longtime collaborator of the mining company, called to Cape Mondego after the large winter storms that accelerated the instability and rupture of the slope close to the mine yard.
