Abstract

Beyond some exceptions, all the studies on the so-called Catalan procés have focused on internal Catalan or Spanish dynamics. The main reasons would therefore be the Constitutional Court ruling on the Statute of Catalonia of 2010 and the consequences of the economic crisis. Without removing relevance to these explanations, in the vast majority of cases the European and international context has been ignored in the attempt to understand the process in a comparative and transnational way. It would seem that Catalonia lived disconnected from what happens beyond its borders and that what happened there was a unicum, inexplicable with categories valid for other contexts. The objective of this article is to ask whether the Catalan case can be part of the new populist wave: can we consider Catalan process as an expression of populism in vogue in Europe in 2010s? And if so, what kind of populism are we talking about?.
