Abstract

Strengthening by prestressing has been widely used in bridges but fewer applications are found in buildings due to aesthetic issues. An innovative strengthening solution was developed by using interior prestressing steel strands with adhesive anchorages. The bond behaviour of deformed bars or threaded rods has been investigated, however, there is no research on the cyclic performance of prestressing strands bonded by epoxy resin. A research on monotonic and cyclic pull-out tests of bonded prestressing streel strands by epoxy resin to concrete is presented in this communication. Ten experimental tests were carried out, respectively six monotonic and four low-rate cyclic tests. All specimens have the same geometry, reinforcement details and concrete strength in order to assure the same confinement and outside general conditions for the tests. Prestressing strands with nominal diameter of 15.7 mm and ultimate force of 279 kN were bonded with epoxy resin HIT-Re 500, from HILTI, in 18.0 mm diameter holes drilled in concrete blocks. The embedment length was 350 mm for both monotonic and cyclic pull-out tests. Specimens load capacity and their respective slip of monotonic and cyclic tests are presented and discussed. The results of the monotonic tests had more disperse values than the results of the cyclic tests. Ultimate slip in the cyclic tests was slightly increased compared to monotonic tests. All tested prestressing adhesive anchors underwent large displacements without any significant decrease in their load capacities. The observed results indicate that this type of post-installed anchors is suitable for seismic strengthening applications and they were used to develop a seismic strengthening solution for existing reinforced concrete beams.
