Abstract

The legendary philosopher Etienne Balibar, one of the most imposing names in contemporary philosophy, came to Lisbon on 3 March 2020 to discuss his article “Ontological Difference, Anthropological Difference, and Equal Liberty”. He impressed everyone with his well-known generosity, which is reflected throughout his work: in his nonconformism to the acceptance of violations of “equaliberty” and all the suffering such violations cause; in his efforts to consider the uniqueness of each human being as transindividuality; and in his tireless struggle to denaturalise discrimination and to build social relations as a practise of “translation” and “hospitality”.
