Abstract
No inicio do seculo XIII Aldobrandino de Siena, físico italiano ao serviço da corte francesa, escreveu a obra conhecida como Le Regime du corps ou Le Regime de Sante. Realizado a pedido da condessa da Provença, Beatriz de Saboia, o livro aborda os principais preceitos de saúde e de dietética necessários para uma vida saudável, sendo considerado o primeiro livro de medicina de língua francesa. Estruturada em quatro partes, cada uma contendo vários capítulos, a obra descreve as praticas medicas, as atividades diárias, as qualidades medicas dos vários alimentos (vegetais, cereais, frutas e carnes) e a fisionomia. Existe na Biblioteca da Ajuda uma copia iluminada de grande qualidade do livro de Aldobrandino, ate hoje pouco estudada – o códice 52‑XIII‑26. Para alem de um frontispício exuberante, o códice apresenta 150 capitulares historiadas, alusivas ao tema dos capítulos que decoram. Este artigo explora a riqueza visual deste códice e apresenta os resultados preliminares da corrente investigação sobre a sua historia e proveniência.
In the 13th century by Aldobrandino of Siena an Italian physician working on the French court, wrote the work known as Le Régime du corps or Le Régime de santé. A commission of the countess of Provence, Beatrice of Savoy, the book presents the main precepts of health required for an healthy life and it is considered the first medicine book written in the French language. Divided into four parts, each one containing several chapters, this work describes medical practices, daily activities, the medical properties of food (vegetables, cereals, fruits and meat), and physiognomy. The Biblioteca da Ajuda (Lisbon, Portugal) has an illuminated copy of this work of great artistic quality, until today unstudied – codex 52‑XIII‑26. The manuscript has a lavish frontispiece and 150 historiated initials alluding to the theme debated in each chapter. This article explores the artistic facets of this manuscript and presents the preliminary results on the on‑going research of its history and provenance.
