Abstract
The Mosteiro de São Martinho in Tibães, the mother house of the Benedictine community in Portugal, preserved 12 account books from the period 1638-1822 in its archives. These books were kept by treasurers under the three-yearly mandates of the abbots of Tibães and contain extensive information on the main purchases relating to the monastery’s embellishment and maintenance. The documents were studied in detail in order to assess the materials employed for painting and gilding building structures and artworks produced in this period, which for the most part are still preserved today.
