Abstract
"Mafra, the 'boulevard' and the Ericeira canal"
How was Mafra physically tied to the sea, apart from the natural vision cue when ascending to the door of the basilica or the windows of the twin palace, where the ocean's horizon is clearly visible (from the top of the dome, on clear days, you can see the entire sea line from Cabo da Roca to Berlengas), and vice.versa? We always had the feeling that the supposed avenue, or 'boulevard' - planned, but never completed - linking the basilica's yard to a closer seaport should, instead, be a canal.
