Abstract
Fundada em 1906, a Sociedade Propaganda de Portugal (SPP) foi uma associação que constituiu o primeiro organismo dedicado à promoção do turismo em Portugal, através de um vasto programa que combinava melhoramentos e propaganda. Este texto pretende analisar a forma como Lisboa foi incorporada no projecto turístico da SPP, sendo que os planos para a cidade estavam claramente filiados na ambição contemporânea de tornar Lisboa o “cais da Europa”. Verifica-se, assim, um desdobramento das preocupações para a capital portuguesa em três áreas: intensificação das ligações marítimas e ferroviárias, reforma dos serviços e urbanismo. Tudo de acordo com uma lógica de normalização de um padrão de gosto e qualidade – ou seja, de modernização do país, da qual o turismo se tornou o pretexto.
Founded in 1906, the Propaganda de Portugal Society (SPP) was an association which constituted the first ever body devoted to the promotion of tourism through a comprehensive programme that combined both improvements and propaganda. This text seeks to examine how Lisbon was incorporated into the SPP's touristic programme since the plans for the city were clearly based on the contemporaneous ambition of turning Lisbon into “Europe's Harbour”. Hence we can find concerns split into three specific areas regarding the Portuguese capital: intensification of sea and rail connections, services and urban planning, everything in accordance with a pattern of taste and quality normalization, meaning, the modernization of the country, in which tourism became a pretext.
