Abstract

A discussion on reductions is presented as a reflection of the nation state, taking as case study the current Portuguese politics and economy, especially in the period preceding and following the official request for external aid to the IMF (International Monetary Fund), in 2011. Particular examples of neology follow, such as acronymic motivation and acronymic loanwords from the English language, whose reputation has resulted in the spread of stereotypes worldwide. In a second part, the problem of the use of initialisms and acronyms is situated in the context of orality and technical writing, to conclude that the knowledge and correct use of reductions are closely related to questions of socio-professional status. There is also room to discuss the difficulties of translating reductions.
