Abstract

Life cycle assessment (LCA) is currently gaining traction in the environmental impact assessment of additive manufacturing (AM) processes as a result of increased awareness and stricter emission control legislation. Although the advantages of AM such as low material waste seem to be environmentally friendly, its environmental impacts must be assessed using a comprehensive methodology like LCA. The adoption of AM processes must also be assessed economically in order to ensure that they are economically viable. In this study, existing studies on LCA and the economic assessment of AM processes are reviewed. The performance of AM processes is also compared with traditional manufacturing technologies. Finally, the circumstances in which AM is more environmentally friendly and inexpensive compared to conventional manufacturing processes, and vice versa are discussed. AM practitioners can use this review to choose a more economical and ecological manufacturing process for their products and minimize emissions and production costs.
