Abstract

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic crisis, universities around the world were forced to an abrupt change, from long lasting face-to-face teaching methods to online teaching ones. Although some had previous e-Learning experiences and most had some degree of technological expertise, most of them had to assure, in a short period, that classes and evaluations continued.
This situation was an enormous challenge for both students and teachers.
Starting with an evaluation of this transitional experience, a team made up of sociologists, an engineer and an anthropologist launched an online survey to students and teachers from Portuguese universities. The inquiries focused specifically on the difficulties, advantages and disadvantages that were experienced during the transition. The results from the answers of
the 116 teachers and 1545 students will be presented in this paper. Keeping in mind whether this forced change was an opportunity to change teaching and learning contexts based on face-to-face interaction, the team interviewed teachers with previous e-learning experience, to compare both situations and discuss the gains and losses from this unprecedented teaching experience.
