Abstract
This essay tries to better understand the Italian M5S and the effort to change itself from its origins as a “movement” to the actually growing reality as a party with governing ambitions. In this way I aim to contribute to the global question about what the populism really is in the 21st century. For the purpose of this research I considered the vast literature about Beppe Grillo and M5S that has been generated since 2008. As well I used some essays that analyse the current populist phenomenon in Spain. In addition, because of the deep link between the M5S and communication media, I have also considered its debates in print, television and digital edition. I have given special attention to the blog of Beppe Grillo (beppegrillo.it), which represents until today the most important platform where the M5S internal debate takes place.
