La dimension europeénne du clergé de Lisbonne (1147-1325)

This text on the European dimension of the Lisbon clergy focuses on the relations that the bishops and members of Lisbon cathedral chapter established with the outside world withint he context of Western Latin Christendom from 1147 to 1325. Within Portugal in general andthe Lisbon diocese in particular, this period was heavily influenced by the advance andconsolidation of the territorial conquests to the south, led by the Portuguese monarchs. The paper initially focuses on the context, analysing the presence of the senior secular clergy at the royal court and their increasing importance due to the central political role that Lisbon gaine dover the period in question. Secondly, it examines the relationship between the seniordiocesan clergy in Lisbon and the outside world. This involves two approaches: on the one hand, university education gained abroad; on the other, visits by members of Lisbon cathedral chapter to dioceses outside Portugal, the pontifical curia and the metropolitan curia ofCompostela. Within this context, mention is also made of the presence of foreigners in thecathedral chapter.

Pretende-se no presente texto sobre a dimensão europeia do clero de Lisboa compreender as relações que bispos e membros do Cabido da Sé de Lisboa estabeleceram com o exterior, no contexto da Cristandade Latina do Ocidente, durante o período que medeia entre 1147 e 1325. Esta época é marcada, no reino de Portugal, em geral, e na diocese de Lisboa, em particular,pelas circunstâncias específicas do avanço e consolidação das conquistas territoriais a sul, lideradas pelos reis portugueses. A atenção centra-se, em primeiro lugar, no contexto, analisando-se a presença do alto clero secular lisboeta na corte régia portuguesa, crescentemente importante devido à centralidade política adquirida pela cidade de Lisboa ao longo do intervalo cronológico estudado. Em segundo lugar, a nossa atenção centra-se no relacionamento propriamente dito entre o alto clero diocesano lisboeta e o exterior, segundo duas perspectivas: por um lado, a formação universitária adquirida no estrangeiro e, por outro, a estada de membros do cabido de Lisboa em dioceses fora do reino e nas cúrias pontifícia e metropolita de Compostela. É mencionada ainda neste âmbito a presença de estrangeiros no cabido catedralício.
