Abstract

In this introduction, we explain why we understand this volume as embodying a convocation of organizational improvisation (OI) scholars, a celebration of the insights developed so far, and an invitation to other scholars to join in the community and to contribute to understanding OI. We include under OI action by individuals and groups within organizations, whole organizations, and industries/populations. We question the relevance of studying OI and comment on how the community of scholars in this field of study has navigated the existence of multiple nests of ideas about improvisation. The structure of this companion is described.
