Abstract

In this introduction, the editors trace the history of sonic remediation, moving through various music histories and outlining the ways in which online culture and YouTube have enabled musical reworking to move into the digital era. With a focus on audiovisual mashups, vidding and cover versions, this chapter applies Richard Grusin and Jay Bolter’s theory of remediation to music and contemporary new media and introduces the chapters that follow.
