Abstract

This chapter outlines how research on authorship in historical keyboard music has evolved from the late eighteenth century to the present. It draws particular attention to the important role in the nineteenth century of historical anthologies conceived from a historical / antiquarian point of view but also from the perspective of performance, the debates about authenticity in the twentieth centred on style analysis, and more recent attempts to understand how concepts of authorship were influenced by historical creative and notational practices.
