Abstract
Introduction: The infant is born with the innate predisposition to apprehend the intentions of the other and to engage in contingent reciprocal exchanges. This study aims to contribute to the scientific evidence about the theory of neonatal communicative musicality. Method: We performed a quantitative microanalysis study about the temporal structure of the vocal interactions recorded in a sample of 36 preterm dyads during the speech conditions vs. singing condition. Results: we observed a decrease in the vocalizations of the infants during the speech or singing, compared to the condition of absence of maternal voice; The infant’s vocalizations during the maternal singing emerge simultaneously to the musical phrases of singing while the vocal responses of the infants in the speech condition emerge mainly in the alternating pauses of the maternal speech. Conclusion:
neonatal communicative musicality seems to be evidenced in both conditions observed, although with distinct temporal characteristics of simultaneity in singing and alternating condition in the speech condition.
