Abstract
Considering the multiplicity ideological transformations, throughout a period of cultural transition between 1968 and 1986, the main objective of this work is to identify, relate and compare the political trajectories of António José Saraiva, Eduardo Prado Coelho e João Martins Pereira. The outset of this study is based on two hypotheses. The first states that Portuguese intellectual field evolved in the direction of a split between post-moderns and melancholics. The second states the absence of utopian political projects among the Portuguese intellectuals. The validity of those hypotheses is tested, in the framework of the history of ideas, by analysing comparatively the writings of the three thinkers, whether in the public or private domains, on the contiguous continents of Marxism, socialism and the left. Supported by broader international debates, the documentary analysis of the present study is based on the books published by the authors, opinion articles in the press and unpublished writings from their personal archives and other sources. The analysis confirmed the hypotheses and led to conclude that these authors went through an important cultural and ideological transformation evidenced by the declining role of Marx’s legacy, by the diminishing utopian-emancipatory hope on socialist political projects and finally, by their intervention in the debates about the validity of the left-right dichotomy and the significance of the concept of left.
