Abstract

In the history of Ancien Régime censorship in France, we still know too little about the production and circulation of catalogs of prohibited non-French books. As Jean-Louis Quantin wrote in 2015, "a separate study should examine the role played by the Roman Index in the absence of a national index. We still need to be able to determine the place that this type of work (there are indexes) may have occupied in the space of bibliological uses, in particular direct controls on the circulation of books and the reading of texts. This paper presents data on the circulation of Indexes designed and produced in Spain and Rome in particular, and their reproduction in France, to shed light on a number of key issues concerning the use and effectiveness of control practices, particularly micro-censorship.
