Abstract

Beginning with a discussion of some of the most productive interpretations of the poem “Áporo” included in A rosa do povo, this essay discusses the role of homonymy and differential repetition in the poetry of Carlos Drummond de Andrade. Through readings of “A palavra,” (A paixão medida), “Cantiga de enganar” (Claro enigma) and “Carta” (Claro enigma) I argue that the conflict among different acceptions of the same word inside a single verse, or a single poem, is a central element in Drummond's poetry, fundamental for the staging of a tension between language and the world, visible in the poet's complex investment in diaphorical repetition.
