Abstract

The production of urban solid waste (USW) is constantly growing due to the industrial and population development. Although the incineration process
reduces the volume, mass and hazardousness of these wastes, huge areas are still required for their disposal. To minimize the impacts associated with its
landfill and to create an ecological material, the present study consists in the recovery of ashes resulting from the incineration of USW through its incorporation
in the production of ceramic materials. The laboratory study was carried out in the preparation of ceramic samples with 0, 5, 10, 15 and 20% of ash,
fired at 900, 1000 and 1100°C and, in the performance of tests for their physical and mechanical characterization. Based on the obtained results it was
possible to verify that the ceramic material, with addition of residue obtained lower values of retraction, conducing to a better conservation of its dimensions.
In addition, it presented a lower apparent bulk density and higher open porosity, which may facilitate its fixation, when applied as cladding material.
