Abstract
This article consists of a case study of Africa Illustrada, a periodical that was part of the history of the illus-trated press in Portugal during the last decade of the 19th century. It was a weekly periodical, edited by Henrique Dias de Carvalho and circulated between 1892 and 1893. The first objective of this work is to understand to what extent the periodical AfricaIllustrada is related to Henrique Dias de Carvalho’s own expedition to the Lunda Empire between 1884 and 1888. The aim is to verify whether the account of the expedition appears both in the text and in the images of the periodical in question. The second objective, in turn, is to evaluate to what extent the content of the periodical was important for the validation of the African territories. The analysis of the textual and visual content makes it possible to identify the intentions of the publication, among them to inform the reading public about a territory unknown to them, but full of potential. In addition to disseminating written and visual accounts of the expedition to the Lunda Empire, the periodical had contributions from other authors and other travelers who explored the territory. The im-portance of the images stands out above all since they played a relevant role in the characterization of the territory and the people who occupied it. The analysis of AfricaIllustrada and its contextualization in the Portuguese publishing environment allows us to infer how the periodical contributed to the knowledge of the African colonial territory and its validation in the early 1890s, in the post-Ultimatum context.
