El Greco at home” and “Address on the occasion of the monument to El Greco

Santiago Rusiñol, Jeremy Roe (Translator)

Research output: Contribution to journalArticle

Abstract

This translation comprises two short articles by Santiago Rusiñol, originally published as newspaper articles in Spanish and Catalan in 1894 and 1897. The first article conveys the enthusiasm and excitement that Rusiñol and his friends, especially Zuloaga, felt about the acquisition of two paintings by El Greco (St. Peter, St. Magdalene) for Rusiñol’s residence in Sitges (Catalonia). The other text is based on his speech given at the inauguration of the statue of El Greco in Sitges, 1897. Rusiñol praises El Greco as a precursor of Velázquez and a pioneering artist who gave form to the soul, and suggests that the new statue of El Greco not only glorifies the artist but also the people who honor this “great” artist.
