Abstract

The health impacts from Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) have been well discussed under the scientific community. This study aimed to characterize the fungal contamination of eleven firefighters headquarters (FFH) with a multi-approach sampling and analyses protocol and compared the results with compliance levels from IAQ Portuguese legislation. The majority of FFH (6 out of 11) respected the fungal quantitative legal guideline (I/O < 1). Regarding fungal qualitative guideline, toxigenic fungal strains belonging to Aspergillus sp. were identified in FFH that did not comply with the quantitative criteria. Also, toxigenic species were found in FFH which fulfilled the guideline (I/O). Concerning the Portuguese criteria, the IAQ guidelines are not efficient to protect health.
