Abstract
There are several factors that influence contaminant transport and mobility in saturated conditions, like physical and chemical properties (porosity, lithology, pH, et al.) and advective, dispersive and reactive transport of pollutants. This work’s main objective is to develop an exploratory analysis about the heterogeneity effects in human health risk calculation and inferring about two software tool’s suitability: (i) RBCA (Risk-Based on Chemical Action) is a human health risk assessment tool used in contaminated sites by hydrocarbons; (ii) PMWIN (Processing Modflow for Windows) is a groundwater modelling tool which also uses the reactive transport of contaminants and considers an approach based on equalization of continuous equivalent media. The present work compares the hazard risk and cancer risk values, caused by groundwater ingestion. These values were calculated with RBCA and PMWIN concentration values in homogeneous geological environment. For this analysis it was considered the tetrachloroethylene, designated as PCE. This contaminant is a halogenated hydrocarbon with a dense non aqueous liquid phase (DNAPL). Keywords: human health risk assessment; heterogeneity, groundwater modeling, PMWIN; RBCA
