Abstract

When the Spanish universities Rey Juan Carlos (urjc) and Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia (uned) launched the call for participation in the International Congress: Hortus Virtualis – Rescates Digitales de la Jardíneria
Histórica, we immediately proposed the virtualization of the garden of the palace of the Condes de Ericeira, located in the old parish of S. José in Lisbon. This famous seventeenth-century garden was recreated next to the Royal Palace
of Ribeira in 1687. This event was related to the wedding festivals of king D. Pedro II and D. Sofa de Neuburgo (1687), during which ephemeral arches were built and freworks were conceived. The presence of the garden of the
Condes de Ericeira, with its statue of Neptune attributed to Gian Lorenzo Bernini, is a mixture of these two ephemeral celebrations: the arches and the freworks. In this text, we propose to establish the historical context that allowed
Alexandre González Rivas to create its virtual reconstitution. In fact, we will address the royal wedding and its festivals, the fgure of the Conde de Ericeira and his palace, and fnally, we will present a virtual reconstruction considering
manuscript and printed sources.
