Abstract

Abstract: A multidisciplinary, multilevel methodology that cross-examines existing historical information from past climate (1st half of 20th century), with geographic information and other historical sources available about population movements (demographic census) is proposed, allowing to map climate variability in the same period and its relationship with migration in Portuguese territory. Results are presented regarding the case study of the Avieiros, a Portuguese fishing community, whose migration shows some correlation in time with the precipitation and temperature series. Developing and validating this approach, will allow for application to other cases in different countries, namely to the Portuguese speaking countries.
