Abstract
Out of a biographical approach to history, I’llpresent us some thoughts related to the ideasof collective identity or sense of belongingbridging the early- and our perhaps-postmodernity.The example of Gregorio Lopez[c.1542-1596] is somehow paradigmatic of a researchor attempt of a better understanding ofwhat the historical narrative about modernityentangles, but also to an informed criticalposition in order to disentangle it.How Gregorio Lopez understood the idea ofbelonging to a community; how he lived theenvironmental change of the americanizationof the “western indies”; but also how we canshare perspectives now with a ‘(non)religious’character from the 16th century atlantic world;these are the challenges for this time andspace trip. Living in, what we now see as, the(un)clear border between the medieval and themodern times, Gregorio Lopez shared hisperspectives in ways most of hiscontemporaries could not imagine. Can we?
