Gellan gum–based biomedical gels

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapterpeer-review

Abstract

Gellan gum (GG) is a negatively charged polysaccharide with a linear structure composed of four units available in two forms and has been used to make a variety of materials. GG-based gels are 3D crosslinked polymer networks gaining a lot of attention due to their unique characteristics, in particular, great biocompatibility and biodegradability, which turn hydrogels suitable candidates for biomedical applications. Tissue engineering and drug delivery systems are the two main areas for the potential application of GG-based gels. Many interesting scientific reports demonstrated the versatility, utility, and therapeutic value of GG-based gels on these fields. Therefore this chapter provides an overview of characteristics and methods to obtain GG-based gels, as well as a thorough analysis on hydrogels applicability in the biomedical field and the future perspectives of their use in this area.
