Abstract

In this chapter we intend to analyse the evolution of the discourse regarding the impacts of industrialization on the Portuguese world of work, looking at the publications devoted to the subject in the third quarter of the 20th century.
After the productivity campaigns of the 1950s divided opinions between workers and employers, there is a strengthening of a discourse that tends to emphasize the logics of humanization of work, combining the necessary improvements in productivity with the problem of wages and working conditions. More than interpreting the reality, which is necessarily multiple, this discourse is the consequence of a set of factors that came together at the time. The international dissemination of the School of Human Relations and its benefits for a regime like the “Estado Novo”; the logics of corporatism, tangled between the new strength they acquired at the time and their internal dissensions; the progressive
modernization of the labour law; the weight of the Church’s Social Doctrine and the Social Catholicism; and the voluntarism of a generation of economists who would start the development of the social studies in Portugal.
