Abstract

This research analyses household organization in the hinterland of Lisbon, from 1730 to 1810. The results show the existence of two systems of domestic group organization, contrasting framers and labourers. The farmers' households set up a succession strategy and domestic organization supporting family succession. In contrast, the labourers based their domestic organization model on both setting new households and giving up any system of generational succession aimed at transferring family land and wealth.
