Abstract
The book on physiognomy of Rolando of Lisbon (Cod. 52-XIII-18) is one of most interesting illuminated codices from the Ajuda Library. It was written between 1425 and 1437 by Rolando, a Portuguese physician who served John, Duke of Bedford, and Philip the Good, duke of Burgundy. The book is profusely decorated by decorated initials and, most of all, by its exuberant frontispiece. It presents an unusual iconography, combining the traditional decorative representation with what can be considered a precursor of scientific illustration. This short article combines these three facets: the life of Rolando, physiognomy and astrology in medieval medical practice, and the role of image in the representation of knowledge. Codex 52-XIII-18 combines these three elements, thus standing as a unique example of its kind.
