Abstract

In 2021, nearly 800 million individuals worldwide struggled with undernourishment, underscoring the critical need for effective strategies to bolster food security for current and forthcoming generations. The nutritional prowess of aquatic food, boasting high levels of indispensable amino acids, highly unsaturated fatty acids, minerals and vitamins, holds high promise. With aquaculture contributing 49% of the global aquatic food supply, it has notably broadened access to regions previously deprived of this nourishment This chapter highlights the nexus between world hunger and the invaluable health benefits of fish consumption. Delving into how aquaculture production can meet escalating fish demands without triggering price, it also correlates increased aquatic food availability and heightened fish consumption. Furthermore, the chapter addresses the imperative of ensuring aquaculture sustainability. While the environmental impact of this industry remains considerably lower compared to terrestrial animal industries, it explores viable pathways to fortify aquaculture sustainability.
